My Hero

sarah

Today marks one year since Sarah Burke had a tragic skiing accident. She is hands down one of my biggest heros! I grew up idolizing her talent on skis and later grew to respect her kind heart and caring personality. Sarah is forever my main source of inspiration. Growing up I would obsess over ski magazines. She was one of the few girls, at that time, who was actually featured. Nowadays, I obsess over those same magazines but mostly for design inspiration. Sarah made her dreams happen and I hope to make my dreams (designing for a ski mag/company) a reality like she did. She will continue to inspire me every single day!

It's only fitting that on this day the Sarah Burke Foundation launches a non-profit dedicated to contuning her legacy. The non-profit organization was established by Sarah’s closest friends and family in an effort to support the causes that were most important to her.

“Sarah had too many amazing qualities to list, but two of the most obvious ones were her love of winter sports, and her commitment to helping people in need,” says Sarah’s husband and Foundation President, Rory Bushfield. ”We are honored to be able to continue Sarah’s practice of giving through the Sarah Burke Foundation and are grateful for the tremendous support we have received.”

The Foundation launches with three active fundraising initiatives: The sale of Sarah Burke Snowflake diamond jewelry necklaces, Lil Wayne limited edition TRUKFIT Sarah Burke t-shirts, and the Sarah Burke Memorial I/OS Smith Optics goggle. A portion of all net proceeds from the sale of the TRUKFIT shirts, plus all proceeds from the sale of the Snowflakes and the Memorial I/OS goggle benefit the Sarah Burke Foundation.

In the future, the Foundation will offer grants to aspiring winter sports athletes in need of financial assistance, and will also work to raise money for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital—a cause which Sarah was very passionate about. A grant application process is expected to be released in early February. In March, the Sarah Burke foundation will partner with St. Jude for the hospital’s first ever on-snow fundraiser; the event is slated to take place in Vail, CO.
